The last time the word train carriage was mentioned in Bass was when Tait carriages, aka 'Red Rattlers' were removed from the iconic Bass Station restaurant, which closed down in the early 2000s.
Work is now underway for 1909T to be turned into a unique exhibit named, Gippsland Historical Model Railway. The end product will be an interactive, all-working, historical model railway. A place where gippslanders and historians alike will be able to go back in time. A place to relive those days of old when early settlers transformed Gippsland's swampland into productive farmland. You don't think time travel is possible? Well wait until you see the end result.
What is it?
The railway will reflect the Wonthaggi Rail Line at the turn of the 20th Century. The layout will include all of the stations and sidings of that era: Nyora, Woodleigh, McKenzie, Kernot, Almurta, Glen Forbes, Woolamai, Anderson, Mitchell's Siding, Kilcunda, Dalyston, Dudley Area, Wonthaggi State Coal Mine, Wonthaggi, Eastern Area and Kirrak.
The working waterways of Bass Strait and Western Port Bay will also be a key feature. Landmarks such as Korumburra's Coal Creek and Wonthaggi State Coal Mine will be an integral part of the layout.
The finished exhibit will be an awe-inspiring attraction resembling something out of Disneyland. Over 100 metres of track will be set in a spectacular mountainous terrain with overpasses, tunnels, secluded passageways, oceans, rivers, stations, villages and famous landmarks of that era. The public will be able to view all parts of the layout via a maze-like walk-through.
Worldwide Hookup
Planned will be the provision for 'real time' train driving whereby people from around the world will be able to interact with the railway via their computers. Cameras will be set up all around the layout and inside the trains for online viewers to operate various sections and drive the trains, respectively, using a specially designed program that the public will be able to purchase.
In particular, disabled people who cannot travel will have the opportunity to interact in a confidence-boosting, community activity, all in the comfort of their homes. If successful, we could see similar projects spring up around the world which could be hooked up via the Internet to form a worldwide train group.
Trains and Scenery wanted
We are wanting trains and buildings to help stock the layout. If you have old HO/OO electric trains or scenery that's been lying around for years, please consider donating it.

All seats have undergone a thorough clean. This involved removing and steam cleaning the cushions, removing the foam sealing strips from the fibreglass bases, removing any indelible scuff marks wherever possible and sandblasting the backs. Note that the seats are left and right-handed, in that they are shaped differently at either end. Be sure to check which hand you want so that it best suits its final resting place. As expected the seats are not in perfect condition due to their age. What you see is what you get. Some people may prefer them just as they are while others may choose to spray over them. The cushions also vary in quality. When you pick up your seat/s you can choose which cushions to take home. First in, best dressed.
